ARALIG
Action Research Action Learning Interest Group
Participatory Action Research and Learning (AR-AL) processes, which have been widely used in community development, social change, and education for decades, are becoming increasingly used in human-nature contexts such as; rural development, natural resource management, and planning. The basic idea of the Action Research - Action Learning Interest Group (ARALIG) is to invite a multidisciplinary group of action oriented institutions and researchers to share their learning models, tools, and methods and their experiences from these processes.
Participatory methods and action research principles are used to understand the reality of the people involved in a development process, and at the same time, encourage self-reflection and learning amongst these people. The AR-AL implies that in addition to making observations, conducting interviews, and literature reviews, action orientated activities are applied. In this way, the researcher, as a parallel outcome to the research, works with the participating stakeholders, to increase their understanding and learning, to develop relevant knowledge, and to accomplish actual change in the situation. Parallel to evaluating the actual change resulting from such collective action, researchers are also cognizant of learning as a crucial outcome for all participants. Action Research thus has several aims; to improve the particular situation (action); to stimulate learning about the situation; to improve the used theory/methodology and practice (reflection); to publish the findings and outcome for to the participants (collective evaluation) and to the critical sphere of the academia (research).
THE STORY OF ARALIG
The Action Research Action Learning Interest Group (ARALIG) was initiated after an Action Research seminar at the Faculty of Life Sciences at Copenhagen University in May 2005. A group of PhD scholars and professors found similar interests in Action Research/Learning, participatory methods, and human nature relationships. Based on this shared interest they created ARALIG. The primary purpose of ARALIG is to build a network of early stage researchers, PhD scholars, experienced researchers, and institutions, working with or interested in Action Research and Learning. In this way, ARALIG seeks to create a discussion forum and develop different activities making it possible to share experiences, build learning communities, and critically discuss theory, methods, and practice of Action Research.
In September 2006 the ARALIG core group decided to design their first activity; a PhD course on the methodology of Participatory Action Research in Évora, Portugal, May 2007. During this course participants, interested in the further development of the ARALIG-Network, met to discuss the future activities of the network. This meeting created a rich variety of ideas and visions for the future of the network, and it was decided, for the time being, to work with two specific future activities: an Action Research Tool Workshop in Budapest, Hungary and an Action Research Seminar in Alnarp, Sweden.
In May 2007 the Blogspot http://aralig.blogspot.com/ was opened with the purpose of having an online forum for self-organisation of the the interest group around our shared needs and interests, and functions as a platform to share experiences from Action Research projects, create discussions, connect with other PhD scholars/researchers, pose questions, upload/ask for references, etc.
PAST ACTIVITIES
Learning in Action for Democratic Change in Human-Nature relationships:
PhD Methodological Course on Participatory Action Research in Relation to Planning and Rural Development, 30th of April - 4th of May, University of Évora, Portugal
The course involved 18 students and 10 lecturers from Portugal, Hungary, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The purpose of the course was to give a methodological insight in AR-AL and relate this with the field of planning and rural development. The course combined lectures and case presentations with group discussions and field excursions.
Prior to the course the students were obliged to hand in an AR-AL related paper, based on the theme of the paper students were divided into groups. These groups, facilitated by a lecturer, functioned as learning communities and aimed at sharing experiences, discussing case related questions, and receiving constructive criticism to improve each paper/research project.
Methodological/theoretical lectures and case presentations generated general Action Research questions, which were used to form thematic discussion groups and plenum presentations from each group. The outcome of these general discussions was further used in the thematic groups to link new insights to own research.
The field excursions opened new perspectives of human-nature possibilities and limitations. Participants from North and South shared their experiences and linked them to the theme of the excursion and to own research.
FUTURE ACTIVITIES OF THE NETWORK
Online Discussion on the ARALIG Blog
Rasmus Klocker Larsen invites to an online discussion about the future of ARALIG, picking up on the ideas emerging during the course in Évora and the discussion on the evening of 2nd May where we specifically addressed the question of the future of ARALIG.
An invitation will be sent to all on the mailing list in week 21.
Action Research Tool Workshop in Hungary: Theory, practice, and praxis of participatory methods and activities
A three day workshop is planned for the spring of 2008 in Hungary 2008. The main aims of the workshop:
Lectures: Present and discuss the theory and methodology behind different types of tools, methods, and activities used in Action Research.
Workshop: Acquire practical experience with tools, methods, and activities by using them in action.
Action Research in action: Fieldtrip to evaluate and discuss methods used in a particular case.
Discussion Groups: Link workshop experiences to own research situation in discussion groups.
Action Research Seminar in Alnarp
Sharing experiences and discussing Action Research processes in Human-Nature relationships.
Present research projects for critical feedback: theoretical framework, methodology, area of concern, and process.
