Further defining our ARAL INTEREST!

Dear friends,

Stimulated by the many ideas which popped up during the course in Evora this post invites for a conversation on the interests which could be addressed within ARALIG. Some of the ideas may already have been treated in the process of forming ARALIG prior to the course in Evora where I as a participant, like others, was introduced first time to the interest group. Hopefully this discussion can contribute to this already existing sense of direction.

I would like to suggest that the outcome of this conversation could be a small briefing note which can support the management of activities in the future, especially if the financial support hoped for is provided for the running of ARALIG.

For now the floor is pretty open and I warmly invite you all to share with us ideas and suggestions on what is and could be addressed within the ARALIG meeting place.

This could comprise for example:
- Views on what is your individual and our perceived common interests as members of the AR AL Interest Group!;
- Which fora for discussion and meetings exist and could be created in the future?
- Which topics are of particular relevance to address?
- What kind of synergies we envision possible to achieve?
- How we can assist in re-educating the academia in the path towards more transformative research practices?
- etc etc etc

I propose to keep the discussion as informal and relaxed as possible! I will as the conversation progresses seek to structure the blog according to the questions and issues raised. I suggest we can also use skype and video-conferencing, together with the email-list, when appropriate. Pls let know of any ideas you may have about this process of online dialogue to Mikaela (e-list manager), and/or my-self.

Pls remember, this online forum is what we make of it! Use it to connect with like-mined people, for coaching in your research work, as an outlet for ideas and frustrations with tight structures, as a source of inspiration et al. The first comment is the start, which in turn represents the most vital step towards establishment of a fruitful dialogue. Therefore, upon reading this, go ahead as you please and make your first comment, and we are on track!

To a wonderful summer, and a good online dialogue until we meet again face to face! In Alnarp or in Hungary! :)

Dear all,
I think that this is a great way to inform people and keep discussion going. Hopefully people will start to use this blog.
E.G. Alnarp group, please, could you tell little more about your plans. Are you still interested in to organise a seminar. And when it could be?

Although we have this blogspot now, it could be nice to have some updates through email from Mikaela, our current ARALIG contact person.

Mikaela, please, let us know when you know something more about the workshop in Hungary or the seminar in Alnarp.

And if somebody knows any other interesting events related to Action Research/Learning or Human-Nature/Commons/Landscape issues, please, inform us through this blog or via Mikaela.

Have a nice summer everybody!
Greetings, Irmeli

Hello guys!

Where are you all? It would be nice to hear from you all again. I think that this blog is a good oportunity for discussing issues related to action research. After all, AR is about interaction, communication and deep reflection, isn't it?

All the best!

HANDLING THE STICK: PRACTICES AND IMPACTS OF PARTICIPATION IN FOREST MANAGEMENT
Case study analyses of Finnish forestry assistance in Tanzania, Mozambique, Laos and Vietnam

Ph.D. thesis by Irmeli Mustalahti, 2007, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

The purpose of the dissertation is to promote the understanding of practices and impacts of participation in forest management as well as to contribute to efforts to analyse the contradictions and sustainability of participatory forest management (PFM). The case studies represent Finnish supported interventions and are part of a research programme, entitled ‘Does Finnish Aid Matter,’ assessing the impact of Finnish aid and coordinated by Institute of Development Studies at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

ARALIG PhD – COURSE – SPRING 2008

A new ARALIG PhD course is planned to take place in Budapest – Hungary, spring 2008. The organisers are still working with matters of funding and timing. Further information about the programme, course dates, and paper deadlines will be sent primo 2008. Below follows some initial information about the course.

Action Research Action Learning Workshop:
SOCIAL LEARNING IN HUMANATURE RELATIONSHIPS - METHODS AND TOOLS IN ACTIONS
Course organisers:
Action Research - Action Learning Interest Group (ARALIG)
Environmental Social Science Research Group (ESSRG), Szent István University Institute of Environmental and Landscape Management, Gödöllő, Hungary
Venue
The workshop will take place at the Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary

Background
Action Research Action Learning (ARAL) is a family of methodologies used in complex situations where improvement is desirable. Humanature relationships characterize situations where human values and interests meet ecological considerations and concerns. The improvement of such situations requires multidisciplinary knowledge and communication along with participation. ARAL is a participatory approach aimed at engaging actors and stakeholders of a given situation in the process of changing it in a normatively desirable direction.

ARAL is a methodology that requires both the use of quantitative, and especially, qualitative methods to facilitate desirable change. Successful use of qualitative methods is, however, often correlated with suitability to the situation and the experience of the researcher. Action researchers need experience with methods and tools to improve their practice as change agents, as well as a social learning arena where methods can be discussed and criticized in order to improve the methodological basis. But how can researchers gain experience with methods if they have never acted as change agents in an action research project?

The workshop “Methods and tools in action” is based on ideas, questions, and needs generated and discussed by PhD students during the ARALIG organised PhD course “Learning in Action for Democratic Change in Human-Nature Relationships in Europe” at the University of Évora May 2007.

Purpose of workshop
The purpose of the workshop is to learn about action research and social learning in theory and action. This learning will be linked to the researchers own research situation through critical reflection and discussion. The idea of the workshop arena is to bring together a multidisciplinary group of action researchers to share, discuss, and reflect on their experiences with different methods and activities. Through theoretical lectures, method experimentation, and field trip observations different learning modes are stimulated and new experiences gained on humanature relationships.

The workshop further attempts to link early stage researchers (PhD students) with experienced researchers to discuss ARAL experiences and critically reflect on its use in own and other research situations. In addition, the workshop opens for a unique learning opportunity where PhD students can experience a regional development Participatory Action Research project in action.

Aim of workshop
To improve the ARALIG network and develop new links between Eastern-Western students and research institutions.
Lectures
 To present the theory and methodology behind different types of tools, methods, and activities used in Action Research.
 To discuss relevance and use of ARAL in human-nature situations
 To critically discuss lectures and link learning with own research situation
Action research in action
 Field visit to still ongoing participatory action research project which aims at facilitating a bottom-up, micro-region level sustainability planning process in a socio-economically disadvantageous area of Hungary.
 To discuss and evaluate current project.
 To link experiences with own research situation.
Active experimentation and critical reflection
 To actively experiment with action research methods and tools.
 To discuss, evaluate and reflect on this experience individually and in group.
 To link experience and learning to own research situation; where, how, and why should I use this method/tool?

Further information about the development of the ARALIG network and activities will be sent through this mailing list and uploaded on the http://aralig.blogspot.com/
If you know others who would like to join the ARALIG mailing list or if you are not interested in receiving further information from ARALIG please contact Mikaela@modalen.as
